A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
